If you are considering moving to Austin, info to consider, a majority of the city council and Mayor are for growth despite it no longer being unsustainable.

https://communityimpact.com/austin/s...d-this-spring/

Possible changes coming as soon as this Thursday-city council and Mayor may vote in without even the public being able to vote and the majority of the Austin citizens being against it.

Highlights/Details:
phase 2:
  • HOME Phase 2: The second piece of the HOME initiative would cut the amount of land needed to build a single-family home down to 2,000 square feet—a reduction of nearly two-thirds from today's 5,750-square-foot minimum lot size in residential areas.
  • Citywide compatibility reductions: Compatibility standards limit the height and other characteristics of buildings near residential areas to ensure new developments conform with their surroundings. Proposed changes would streamline some of the rules, such as reducing compatibility's "trigger" distance from single-family homes to just 75 feet, a more than 80% reduction from the current 540-foot limit.
Please research this and also that the surrounding cities are running out of water.

Austin isn't running out of water anytime soon. Phoenix and LA are in much worse shape than we are.. ..what is a bit concerning though is the city is not looking into harvesting brackish waters. The water concern is the least of Austin's worries though. Can be solved with investment.

Yep, hundreds of millions of gallons of fresh water is lost annually in the aging & leaking piping system in large parts of Austin from what the city has admitted for years.

18% of water from LCRA went to agricultural use in 2023, almost entirely rice farming. Rice farming based on releases from Lake Travis (et al) will go away in the not so distant future. If climate change continues to reduce in-flow to the LCR, then irrigation will go away next. While there needs to be a plan, the CoA is not in immediate danger of running out of drinking water.

I don't think brackish is much of a thing in the Austin area, although it apparently has more potential in the SA area. This is a 20 year old report, but aquifers don't change that much . The central Texas portion starts around page 49.
