I've lived in Austin for almost 3 years now. My apartment is nice. I share with 1 other person and pay around $800 a month plus bills. It's hard. I'm a student and only work part-time. I've been thinking of moving to San Marcos in hopes the rent might be cheaper, and maybe I could even live on my own, but so far the prices seem pretty similar. Am I better off just staying where I am for now?

instead of an apartment get a house with 1 or 2 more bedrooms. You might even be able to rent out on air bnb and make a lot more money.

You pay $800 with a roommate? I pay less that $1,000 without a roommate.

San Marcos is a little cheaper, but the cheaper places are usually old. I don't mind living in older places that are kept in good condition, but I came across a few places in San Marcos that weren't and lived at one of them.

Two of my colleagues were born and raised in San Marcos...they work up in north austin with me but they are both moving to Austin because San Marcos has become about the same, so theres no point in living all the way in San Marcos anymore.

Yeah $800 with a roommate, and no bills paid. I'm in the South part of town and go to ACC right now. I might be transfered to TSU next year.

If you're willing to live with roommates, many apartments in San Marcos are specifically designed to house and match roommates. Many of them are all-bills-paid.

Second that, if you get transferred to TSU move to San Marcos, it will be much more convenient even if it isn't cheaper.

Generally speaking, buying in San Marcos is less expensive than Austin; renting is not much less. The large number of students creates a crazy demand for rentals and apartments. The pubic schools there aren't great either, which tends to hurt the sales market.

I agree with the others, if you are going to go to Texas State, then move to San Marcos. I went to school there and stayed in San Marcos for years after graduating because I really liked living there. It's a really great little town. I finally left after the commute into Austin for work became too much.
