We plan visiting end of June. Coming from Nashville so probably get best price into Anchorage. We log a lot of rode time when vacationing so driving doesn't bother us. Love to check out local places on way.

What would be a good route to see as much as we can but affordable expeditions as well?

Thank you.

If you give us an idea what types of things you like to see/do that would help. Alaska is huge and diverse, but much of the state is not accessible by road so if your main transportation will be a rental car that will affect your trip immensely! Hiking and mountaineering? Backpacking/camping for multiple days? Fresh or salt water fishing? River recreation? Marine/glacier tours? Wildlife and bird watching? Historical sightseeing? Cultural events? Flightseeing air tours? Also be aware that the major rental car companies people think of don't permit their cars off hard pavement so many routes to scenic destinations would technically be off limits because their access roads aren't paved. If the car ends up damaged you could face penalties or lose deposits. You'd need to meet up with with excursion/tour bus services that go there instead. Other big parks and destinations aren't accessible by road; air taxi, charter or ferry boat only.

If your trip will primarily be private car-road based, this is sort of the state's interconnected highway "loop" you could plan some sections of:

That website is a good source of other ideas for a travel itinerary.

The best travel aid for the state is:

The Milepost

One thing many summer newbies don't realize...you won't see the aurora borealis. Depending on how far north you go it doesn't get dark enough at "night" in June.

Default Activities

Great information. We are pretty open . I think Denali, wildlife viewing, and ice cruises would be priority. Moderate hiking if possible.
