When Hurricane Sandy struck the New York City area on October 29, 2012, it knocked out electricity for tens of thousands of residents. At local disaster recovery centers set-up around the city, FEMA has set up cell phone charging stations so residents could charge their phones, allowing them to talk to friends and loved ones, as well as conduct business.
