Tunnel View

The historic Tunnel View scenic overlook site is located next to Wawona Road. The overlook offers views of Yosemite Valley, El Capitan, Bridalveil Falls, and Half Dome. The overlook was built in 1932. Wawona Tunnel and Tunnel View were determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 because of their design elements. Very little physical change has occurred to Tunnel View's features since it was built in 1932. The site remains one of the most popular scenic overlooks in Yosemite National Park. Tour buses, tram tours, and single-family vehicles bring an estimated five to seven thousand people to the site per day during the height of the tourist season.

Currently a rehabilitation project is under way to mitigate issues with Tunnel View. The purpose of the Tunnel View Overlook Rehabilitation Project is to fix vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian safety issues, correct drainage problems, provide clear traffic flow patterns for people and vehicles, enhance viewing opportunities for visitors, provide handicap accessibility to viewing areas, to correct safety problems associated with the Inspiration Point trailhead, and to mitigate sanitation issues. The project will greatly improve the experience for all visitors and park officials welcome public involvement and input regarding decisions.
