McPherson Center

The Museum of Art and History is located in the McPherson Center and seeks to promote an understanding of the contemporary art and history of Santa Cruz. It does this through a variety of programs, exhibitions, and collections. The collection includes objects that illustrate the conditions, life, events, and activities from the past through modern times. Each in some way shares information about the exploration, settlement, development, and culture in Santa Cruz. These items include toys, dolls, games, sports equipment, textiles, coins, stamps, and memorabilia. The boardwalk has been a vital part of the Santa Cruz community and materials are on display from various times throughout the history of the boardwalk. In addition to displays and exhibits, the museum offers art education to the community through several programs. There are adult tours offered through the museum that include information geared toward specific needs. Families can also enjoy the gallery and tours can include performances, workshops, family festivals, and a variety of other activities. The Art for Lunch program is held the first Friday of each month and provides a free tour of the museum and lunch on the grounds. Guided tours are also offered for groups of ten or more and usually last about an hour. Groups tours must be scheduled in advance.
