Fremont Peak State Park

Fremont Peak State Park can be accessed via San Juan Canyon Road 11 miles south of San Juan Bautista, California and is approximately one hour and 15 minutes drive from San Jose. The park is open all year round from 8am to half an hour after sunset. Camping and picnic facilities are available here with the maximum camper and trailer length permissible being 25 feet.

The park features an astronomical observatory, which is open for public programs on selected evenings. These include moonless evenings between April and October from 8pm when visitors can see through the 30-inch telescope. There is much to see at the park in the daytime too with various types of birds and mammals amongst the pine and oak woodlands.

The Freemont Peak Trail is a one mile round trip taking hikers through a ravine and back up to the observatory. From Freemont Peak visitors will get spectacular views of Monterey Bay, San Benito Valley, Salinas Valley and Santa Lucia Mountains. There are no water facilities at the park so visitors will need to bring their own and given the weather can be very changeable, layered clothing is advisable.
