Doheny Mansion and Chester Place

The Doheny Mansion at Chester Place, located at 8 Chester Place, Los Angeles, CA, is just south of downtown Los Angeles. Built in 1889, the mansion has endured well over the years with few alterations. It is now owned by Mount St. Mary's College and used for faculty residences and occasionally as a set for both movies and TV shows.

Of the 13 large estates built in Chester Place, Los Angeles' first gated community, the Doheny Mansion is the grandest of all. Built on a block-sized park, the large chateau's exterior features incorporate Gothic, Tudor and California Mission design influences. The 22-room interior is equally as impressive; one of the highlights being the Pompeian Room featuring a large tiffany-styled glass dome, marble columns and a geometrically patterned floor.

Tours, both public and private, start at the Doheny Mansion and include history of Chester Place and other prominent residents of the neighborhood. Tours are available on select dates only. Children under 12 years old are not allowed, and reservations are required.

The public guided tours are limited to 15 people; private tours are available for groups of 10 to 40 people. Though photos of the mansion's exterior are permitted, pictures of the interior are not allowed.
