Devereaux Slough


Goleta Point is near Santa Barbara in the west. Goleta, California and most importantly Goleta Point is well known for its beachcombing. The six miles of shoreline are between Goleta County Beach and Ellwood Oil Field. There are numerous tidepools and coastal ecosystems to explore in this region like the Devereaux Slough (Slew). Devereaux Slough is just one of the sloughs in the area with a unique ecosystem.

It is a breeding ground for marine and shore wildlife, as well as numerous bird species. This slough is highly protected by the state, since others have been lost to filling and development pressures. As a protected area it is a place for teaching and research by local students and scientists. Since the Slough is in Coal Oil Point Preserve, visitors need proper shoes. You will be walking near tar areas on the beach. It is also necessary to have proper water, sunscreen, and a hat to help keep protected from the southern California sun. Dogs are not welcome on the beach. Visitors should come to Goleta County Beach and walk towards Goleta Slough to get to Devereaux Slough past the main campus reserve area and UCSB Lagoon. Visitors are encouraged not to take anything from the area.
