Robert Shaw was the man behind the formation of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 1967. He founded the ASO as a way to bring the community together with a variety of music including having black members to the performances in order to enhance the world of music he sought to provide.

One concert event throughout the year is the Theater of a Concert which shows a mix of musical programming with visual aids to the performance.
