  • Description:
  • The Valatie Free Library's chartered area includes the village of Valatie, the hamlet of Niverville, Kinderhook Lake, and Kinderhook town in Columbia County along the scenic Hudson River Valley of New York State. Begun as a casual circulation of collected books in 1928, the Valatie Free Library Association was chartered by the Valatie Parent Teachers Association in 1931. The original library was housed in a local Church, and owned two-thousand books when it moved in 1939 to its current location—a 600 sq foot cottage. During the past decade, the Library has seen an explosion of growth; in 2002, the library offered just six programs for the public; in 2012, nearly 140. Program attendance has grown more than 1000 % percent. Our need for a larger space to properly address this growth will be solved by our Sustainable Library project, which increases our operational space without increasing the library's operations budget. Our forthcoming Sustainable Library project caught the attention of the United Nations' recent Earth Summit (Rio+20) for our commitment to investing in a new library facility with the goal of attaining near net-zero-energy use (our project was featured at the UN's Brazil summit in June, 2012). Our planned green building design aligns our resource-use with 'ever-green' practices, which includes installation of photovoltaic solar panel technology, ductless air conditioning, and skylights. The iconic and near-Net-Zero hybrid Sustainable Library building will be created through the retrofit and expansion of an historic freight barn. The new sustainable library will create an energized landscape of learning, and provide access to information for all age groups, while providing a centralized location and facility that meets multiple community needs, i.e. community hub for the entirety of the Library's chartered district. Current programming includes: weekly Story Hours, Tutoring, foreign language classes, summer programs, craft workshops, and special events for children; Monthly Book Club, computer and craft workshops, as well as cooking classes for adults. A member of the Mid-Hudson Library System (MHLS), the Valatie Free Library provides member access to more than 2.5 million items (books, DVDs, etc). The MHLS links the Valatie Free Library to Mid-Hudson's five-county inter-library loan system and coordinates exchange of library materials with other libraries. The Valatie Free Library operates as a registered 501(c(3) Non-Profit Organization and all donations are fully tax-deductible.
