I had a fun childhood growing up in the Syracuse area since my parents were taking me to mini family vacations or day trips very often where we would leave early in the morning and come home late in the evening, mostly during the summer.
Here are some of the best places I went on a day trip as a child
1. Alex Bay in Thousand Islands
2. Niagara Falls
3. Old Forge in the Adirondacks
4. Cooperstown
5. Letchworth State Park
6. Lake George
7. Oneida Shores Beach
8. Sylvan Beach
9. Beaver Lake Nature Center (went here all the time)
10. Fairmount Miniature Golf
11. Chittenango Falls
12. Platts Falls
13. Onondaga Lake Park (went here all the time)
14. The Mall...Penn Can Mall then, replaced now by Destiny USA
15. Albany History Museums
16. Syracuse Triple A Baseball games
17. Veron Down Horse Racing
18. Chuck E Cheese
19. Mall Arcade (went here a lot)
20. Bowling
21. Syracuse Zoo
22. Swings at Park
23. Catch ball games and sledding at Clay Park South
24.Train rides to Rome, NY and Albany, NY
25. Syracuse University Dome Games
Some other places we didn't go but are worth the trip are Howes Caverns and Herkimer Diamond Mine.
^I’d add Jamesville Beach, Green Lakes State Park, Valley Field Days(not around anymore), Shoppingtown Mall, Camillus Mall(first mall is waiting for development and the latter is now Camillus Commons), Fairmount Fair(was enclosed, but is now a plaza that made a comeback), Clayton in the Thousand Island(inc. the Boat Museum), Old McDonald’s Farm just outside of Sackets Harbor, Fort Rickey Game Farm in Rome, Baltimore Woods in Marcellus, Marineland in Niagara Falls ON(Canada, doesn’t have the “Everyone Loves Marineland” ads anymore), Corning Museum of Glass, Webster Pond in the Valley neighborhood, Ice Cream at either Marble Farms(not around anymore and the Valley location became Arctic Island)/Gannon’s also in the Valley neighborhood(among other shops); Onondaga Lake Park(inc. Lights on the Lake during the winter holidays) and more.

This is also why I wish there could be a sport complex nearby that hosted AAU or other events, that would bring in families that come to see their kids play and could stay in a nearby hotel and patronize these options, as well as stores at the mall. That complex could also be used to host tournaments for high school, college or even pro(minor) sporting events.
Just so people can see what I'm referring to, here is a view of land in the Inner Harbor area in between Destiny USA and the Franklin Square district/neighborhood: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0635...!1e3?entry=ttu
To be fair, it was once an area called Oil City, with a bunch of tanks until the late 1980's/early 90's, but there is enough land to create a whole new neighborhood that connects Destiny USA to Franklin Square, which is right by Downtown.
