Lotusland

Lotusland is a 37-acre estate featuring botanic gardens. It is located in the foothills of Montecito, just east of Santa Barbara. Tours can be scheduled for those who would like to enjoy the color and peacefulness of the gardens. The gardens were created by Madame Ganna Walska, owner of the property until 1984. The goal of Lotusland is to promote knowledge and appreciation of plants and the need for conservation. Tours allow visitors to learn about the history of the grounds, the gardens, and various horticultural practices. They are held Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am until 1:30 pm from mid-February until mid-November. Docents lead the tours and help visitors spot all of the interesting features on the grounds. Walking tours typically last about two hours and can be designed for visitors from age ten through adulthood. Family tours are also available for those who would like to bring children younger than ten for a visit. The grounds are a popular destination for field trips which are free, as well as art classes. There is a special educational program for fourth graders held on the premises in a classroom. The program offers a more in-depth exploration of the Lotusland grounds and teaches kids about the importance of protecting rare and endangered plant life.
