Loch Leven Lakes Trail

This trail leading to the Loch Leven lake chain is a popular destination among outdoorsmen. The trailhead is located just east of Big Bend Visitor Center off Old U.S. Highway 40 and includes rocky terrain, steep elevation changes, and scenic vistas.

At the summit, hikers reach three glacier-made lakes that are encased by granite. There are plentiful red-fir-shaded spots for camping. Though only a few miles from interstate 80, hikers will find themselves enjoying solitude and views of North Fork American River canyon and Snow Mountain.

The Loch Leven Lakes Trail stretches about 5 miles long, increases elevation by 1090 feet and is the most popular hike in the Tahoe National Forest. At the trailhead near Big Bend Visitor Center, hikers can find a restroom and parking. Fishermen will enjoy catching trout along the trail, especially during cooler weather when the trout become more active. A side trail will take hikers to Salmon Lake, a tangent that will reward hikers with more breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevadas.

The Loch Leven Lakes Trailhead is located within a moderate driving distance of Lake Tahoe, Donner Memorial State Park, Ice Lakes Lodge, Boreal Mountain Resort, numerous campgrounds, and is 45 miles west of Reno-Tahoe International Airport. :
