Lake Oroville State Recreation Area

On the western slopes of Tahoe National Forest, Lake Oroville State Recreation Area boasts a variety of outdoor activities and beautiful surroundings.

Built in 1967, the dam at the south end of this man-made lake is the largest dirt-filled dam in the country, measuring 770 feet above the Feather River. Outdoor activities at this recreation area include horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, power or sail boating, fishing, and swimming. There are a variety of camping options, such as boat-in camping, floating campsites, and horse camping.

The visitor center, also at the south end of Lake Oroville, features a 47-foot tower from which patrons can view the Sierra Nevadas, the lake, the valley, and the foothills. The visitor center also has a museum, videos, exhibits, and a store.

Lake Oroville's climate resembles a mild, Mediterranean-type climate, so the weather makes for pleasant vacations year-round. During the springtime, a short trip up the middle fork of the Feather River will take you to Feather Falls, a 640-foot waterfall.

By car Lake Oroville State Recreation Area is 90 minutes north of the Sacramento International Airport. Nearby visitors can find other activities of interest, including the Gold Nugget Museum, Chico Creek Nature Center, backcountry adventure outfitters, and casinos.
