American River Bicycle Trail

The American River Bike Trail has been called one of the most successful and beautifully paved bike paths in northern California. It provides an escape from downtown Sacramento, passing through lush parks and along scenic riverside areas with lovely views and no traffic to contend with. In fact, the entire 33-mile trail is almost completely separated from vehicle roads, with only about a mile or two shared.

The American River Bike Trail starts in downtown Sacramento and heads east toward Folsom Dam. As might be expected from its name, much of the route follows the banks of the American River. Open year-round, the route is also known by the name "Jedediah Smith National Recreation Trail." It does not gain much in elevation, making this a relatively easy ride for cyclists of all levels. The lowest point is at the trailhead, just 25 feet above sea level, and the highest point is at an elevation of just 450 feet.

All along the way there are mile markers posted, beginning with at zero at the far western end. The terrain is varied, but never far from residential and commercial neighborhoods. Plenty of birds can be spotted along the way in the rich riparian environment. The path is well maintained, and it can be accessed freely from dozen access points along the way, allowing users to customize their trips making them as short as long as they like, up to a maximum of 66 miles out and back.
