Description: Located on the public bus line to Ocean Beach, this neighborhood hostel has 58 dorm beds available at $19 to $24 per night and five private rooms with shared bed at $44 to $53 per night. Laundry, Internet, and kitchen facilities are available, as is free parking. The Point Loma library is just down the street, and there’s a grocery store and Laundromat across the street. The immediate neighborhood is mostly residential, but the beach is a 10-minute bus ride away. Reservations are advised.

Description: Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU), founded in 1902, sits on 90 acres atop the bluffs of Sunset Cliffs on the Point Loma peninsula. Sponsored by the Church of the Nazarene, PLNU offers a liberal arts curriculum in an environment of Christianity in the evangelical and Wesleyan tradition. It has a small enrollment of just more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Ranked in the top tier in its category by U.S. News & World Report, PLNU offers some 50 undergraduate degrees as well as graduate degrees in education, business, nursing, and religion, among other fields.The university has satellite campuses at Mission Valley as well as two outside San Diego County, in Arcadia and Bakersfield. Nearly 80 percent of its faculty has a doctoral degree. Students participate in on-campus cultural events; extracurricular activities, including clubs and organizations, fraternities and sororities, and campus ministries; and programs abroad. Fourteen women’s and men’s intercollegiate sports are affiliated with the NAIA.

Description: Charter boats are available with Fisherman’s Landing for one-day, two-day, or long-range trips lasting several nights. The captains will head for whatever type of fish is in the waters and do their best to make sure even novices catch something. The cost of a one-day trip on a 65- to 95-foot boat, which leaves at night and returns the next evening, ranges from $165 to $200; gear rental is extra. Equipment is available for purchase.

Description: H&M offers half-day and longer trips. Their half-day trips stick close to shore and are a good option for those trying fishing for the first time. Tackle sales and equipment rental are available. Full-day trips depart at night and return the next night to provide optimum fishing time. Some boats have private staterooms; others have shared bunk rooms. Rates run between $135 and $225 for an overnight trip.

Description: This outfit arranges fishing trips on several different charter boats. They offer short, inexpensive trips to long-range trips lasting 16 days or more. Half-day trips are great excursions for first-timers who aren’t totally hooked on fishing yet. They cost only $42 and last about five hours. These trips are great family excursions. If you go in the winter months, you might even spot gray whales while you’re fishing for everything from bass to tuna.
