Description: Murals that cover the exterior walls of this institute of Mexican, Chicano, and indigenous arts and culture depict the historical and mythological roots and traditions of these cultures. Both traditional and experimental forms of visual and performing arts are presented in the classroom/workshop space, including film screenings, literary presentations, and numerous workshops such as African drumming, video production, and salsa dancing. Recent years have seen an increase in theatrical music and dance performances as well as art exhibits. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

Description: Many cultures are adopting the word “mingei” to mean “art of the people.” The mission of the San Diego Mingei International Museum is to further understanding of art of all cultures of the world. The goal is to open a window to a broad view of the creative potential of all people. The Mingei Museum displays arts and crafts of unsurpassed beauty. Frequently changing and touring exhibitions present essential art forms, such as ceramics, textiles, baskets, pottery, toys, furniture, and other objects of daily use. Also in the collection are hundreds of pieces of pre-Columbian artifacts from North and South America. Numerous videos are available for viewing. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for students and children ages 6 to 17. Admission is free for children younger than age 6. Admission is free for everyone on the third Tuesday of each month.
