Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument

The Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument was set up on Coronado in California to honor those who fought and gave their lives during that war. Up until 9-11 Naval Amphibious Base was open to the public for those wishing to see the Vietnam Unit Memorial. Since that deadly day in New York the base is now closed to the public, even for the monument. It requires prior notice to see the Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument or any of the boat displays that are part of the project.

If granted permission visitors can get a base sticker and get an escort to see the monument. The monument is dedicated to Navy and Coast Guard veterans. It was unveiled on May 21 1999. About 700 names are on the 66 foot long 8 foot tall monument with 26 panels. The names, ranks, hometowns, units, and dates of death are marked. Many of the names are from those in the brown water operations, which ran from 1960 to 1975. Also honored on the memorial are 38,000 Army, 2,500 Air Force, and 14,800 Marines who fought in the Vietnam War. A 21 gun salute and dedication ceremony unveiled the monument to the public.
