Travel Town

Travel Town is located on a 9-acre site at 5200 Hollingsworth Drive in Griffith Park in the city of Los Angeles. Travel Town is dedicated to preserving the history of the city through showcasing several unique modes of transportation of years gone by that travelled the city streets. William Fredrickson birthed the idea back in 1947 during his role as the lead administrator for the recreation and parks department for the city. Travel Town started with a very small budget of $700 given to Fredrickson by the city council. Word spread fast of the new idea and many donated vehicles came pouring in. Travel Town features several interactive displays such as a 44-passanger street car, a 50 year old kerosene tank wagon, 104-ton locomotive, and an old WWII fighter plane.

Travel Town is visited by several hundred children per week. Admission is still free of charge and the museum opens daily at 10:00 am. The town has grown and now includes a booster club, on site gift shop, e-newsletter, and is the host of several events throughout the year. Travel Town can also be rented out for private birthday parties and celebrations. Travel Town is currently seeking to bring in new displays.
