Sutro Tower

Sutro Tower is one prominent object in San Francisco, California. Sutro Tower is 981 feet with three prong antennas rising above Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks is located in Clarendon Heights, with Sutro Tower sitting atop it. It has become a part of the City Skyline that residents and visitors tend to see as they drive around.

The tower was opposed before the completion because of the less than pretty picture it makes. In the beginning residents felt it detracted from the skyline and beauty of the peak. However, the tower broadcasts radio signals, thus it was needed in 1973 in order to help with radio broadcasts for the large San Francisco area.

It still broadcasts radio signals today. It is also for television broadcasts. Before the tower was built many in San Francisco had failing signals. This was before cable and satellite became popular. It is used for HDTV signals now since analogue has become outdated. It is a truss style tower, meaning it is pieced together with large iron trusses. The height of the tower makes it possible to see on a clear day, especially from East Bay Peak on Mount Diablo. Visitors cannot get close to the tower in order to protect them.
