Description: An intimate 16-room hotel that’s rustic and attractive, the lodge also serves as Julian’s social center, with holiday parties and a festive Sunday brunch. A stay here is popular with those who want to escape from hectic San Diego living and breathe in pine-filled mountain air. This hotel isn’t for every traveler. If you need a TV in your room, find another place to stay, since the Pine Hills Lodge doesn’t have them. Some cabins have fireplaces or wood-burning stoves. All are comfy, with down comforters on the beds and wood and wrought-iron furnishings that suit the location.

Description: Beneath majestic pine and oak trees on a serene hillside that’s just footsteps from the historic town of Julian is the comfortable, inviting Butterfield Bed & Breakfast.Breakfast is a grand affair, with country gourmet served in the Garden Gazebo in the summer and by the crackling hearth when winter sets in. The Back Porch Pantry is stocked with fruit, coffee, cider, microwave popcorn, and afternoon sweets. There are five rooms at the inn. All have televisions, and three have fireplaces. The Rosebud Cottage is decorated in country decor with a potbelly stove, sitting area, and knotty pine ceilings and is a world away from reality. Smoking is not permitted, and none of the rooms have wheelchair access. Children are welcome; pets are not.

Description: Far more than a B&B, Orchard Inn has 22 rooms with deluxe amenities, including a split of wine, Belgian chocolates, and fragrant toiletries. Some rooms have whirlpool tubs, others have fireplaces, and all have TVs and VCRs (there’s a tape library in the main lodge). The rooms have been featured in many decorating magazines; some have wheelchair access. The sophisticated restaurant serves breakfast and afternoon hors d’oeuvres daily and fantastic dinners on some night of the week. Ask in advance if dinner will be served; it’s $35 to $43 per person.

Description: Go for the pie—apple pie, that is, and the pie that put Julian on the map. And be sure to save room after the large servings of American-style choices served at the Grille. This is where the Julian Insiders and visitors eat, and during Apple Days and when the art and photo shows are held, it can be busy. Service is good at the Grille, and the food worth the wait.The Julian Grille is a nice tradition for every trip to the mountain community. It’s open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday.

5. Romano’S Dodge House

Description: This restaurant is just a block off Main Street in a historic house in downtown Julian. The cuisine suits appetites stimulated by the mountain air. Try the pork loin in cinnamon, garlic, and whisky sauce or the spicy apple-cider sausage. Ask about the daily specials, and check out the pizza variations. Credit cards are not accepted here, but it is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Monday.
