Santa Rosa Mountains/ San Jacinto National Monument


Santa Rosa Mountains and San Jacinto National Monument is a premier geographical location near Palm Springs, California. The monument rises up 10,834 feet above sea level. The monument is picturesque against the nearly flat valley it rises from. Part of the attraction to Palm Springs and Coachella Valley is the national monument. In the last decade it has become a popular resort and retirement community. Several large homes with private pools exist nearby the monument.

Santa Rosa Mountains and the National Monument encompass 272,000 acres including 65,000 acres of the San Jacinto Ranger District and San Bernardino National Forest. It is also part of the 89,500 acres of Bureau of Land Management's California Desert Conservation Area.

The monument was established in 2000 to help preserve its natural beauty, biological significance, recreational, geological, educational, scientific, and cultural value. Since the first Native Americans, the area has been important to a number of cultures. There are a few archeological sites that are studied for artifacts and way of life. Other research projects near the monument look to study plant life and animal life and how it changes regarding weather patterns and with other influences.
