Niles Canyon Railway

The Niles Canyon Railway leaves from Niles Station at 37001 Mission Blvd, Fremont, CA. It was in 1866 that the first passenger train ran through Niles Canyon where the town of Niles eventually was established. The unique cuts through the canyon can be seen today when visitors take a ride. Some of the locomotives are still the old fashioned steam type. Visitors that are interested in riding on these trains should consult the train schedule. The Niles Canyon Railway operates from January through October. The trains depart from Sunol Station or Niles Station with a one way trip taking about a half hour. Guests that wish to ride round trip should plan on 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The train cars consist of three types so that visitors can get the most from the ride through the canyon. There are enclosed coaches, open cars and covered open cars and they are filled on a first come first served basis. Residents from the San Francisco area can take the BART transit to reach the Niles Canyon Railway Station. Wheelchairs are allowed on the train; however, they are restricted to two per train. Appropriate dress is recommended as the trains depart regardless of the weather.
